It's going to be Everywhere
Flakes has been recruited for exhibition in several venues, both
online and at different festivals including The Animation Show's
MySpace channel, AWN's Video Portal, and the //ADAPT
Conference in Montreal.
In addition, it's slated for inclusion in 3D Total's DVD anthology,
the 2007 Shorts
Drawer.
Really thinking about the rest of the episodes now in earnest. Episode
One - Fighting the Slide - will become a trailer of sorts for the
entire series, so getting it out to as many people as possible makes
a lot of sense.

Award Winning
Flakes has won Mobifest LA, an animation festival for short animated
films made for mobiles (phones, Palms, etc.) Got flown out to LA
for the ceremony by the fine folks at Mobifest and The Animation
Show, got a bunch of tech stuff and won a creative session with
director Mike Judge.
Very proud the film's been received so well, and people really seem
to dig it. Starting to think about getting the rest of the series
done now. Anyone know a good animator who's just begging for the
chance to work on something like this? :)

CHA CHA CHA
I have loved most things about making this movie, but by far the
best experience has been working on the sound. Why? Well, I'm a
nut for sound - been dragging pillows, squeaky chairs, and bottles
of spices into the studio for foley.
But most of all because tonight, I got to sit my 3 boys down in
front of a microphone and get them to sing the cha cha cha over
Herman's lovely score. That's just more fun than you can shake a
salt shaker at.

Music
I was lucky enough to get the ultra talented Herman
Witkam to add his cha cha flavor to the short. This composer
is putting together a score for episode one, with percussion help
from the equally talented Salvador Pelaez. Listen to Herman's samples
at his website,
especially "Rekindled". Very nice.

Final pass
There are about a thousand niggling little things it takes to get
the initial pass to the place it's as fun to look at as my initial
sketches. It's all down to slight changes in composition, color,
contrast, lighting, and render settings. It all goes to feel.

Initial pass
Bully's Steve Karp and Waymon Harrold animated the whole 30 second
short in under two weeks, and Carlson Bull ran the initial batches
of renders. The shots looked very good, especially considering they
were created at top speed.

3D Layout
Bully's Steve Karp made a quick animatic from my original storyboards.
After we all discussed the timing and made a few adjustments, he
made a 3D animatic with most elements laid out.

Mirror
We're using software called VRAY, which makes it easy to get nice
lighting, a must when most of your stuff is made of snow. Working
on the VRAY materials here, to get the look of an antique mirror.
Also, you'll note the first appearance of Milton's teeth. Originally
he wasn't going to have teeth, but in storyboarding the short, I
found teeth useful for expressions - grunting, gasping for breath,
etc. So, I added the choppers at the last minute.

Bully to the Rescue
My friends at Bully Entertainment, an animation and game development
studio in downtown Baltimore, are interested in using a short version
of Milton's first episode as a holiday greeting and possible TV
spot. They have generously offered to help with the animation.

MODEL - Peary's house
Peary's house is built after a birdhouse I saw once. I went from
memory, so it probably doesn't look anything like the original,
but such is inspiration. As an added Bird-touch, I gave the roofline
a distinctive badminton Birdie feel.

-
DESIGN - Peary's house
Eye on the birdie. In contrast to Milton's carefully constructed
snowcottage, Peary's birdhouse seems thrown together and less thought
out. And of course, it's painted in garish colors because that's
how Peary likes it. (Can you paint snow? *shrug*)

-
DESIGN - Peary's mailbox
It's probably overkill to design something like this, but then the
differences between Peary and Milton's personalities manifest in
things like their houses, their mailboxes... so it's probably for
the best to work these things out on paper just to make sure.
